Berry Goodness

I was checking out the local paper online yesterday and found out that a lot of local strawberry farmers are now offering you pick ’em for $1/2 quarts.  So this afternoon J and I headed to one of the closest ones for some strawberry picking.

It was a gorgeous day to do so.  While warm, there was just enough of a breeze to keep the heat away.  And I walked away with 6 quarts of beautiful red berries for only $3!!!  Some are going to my neighbor.  She had a birthday party to attend today.  The rest are mine.  I’m thinking of splurging and buying some rhubarb at the store.  It gets shipped in here and is pretty pricey.  All because Florida doesn’t have the right climate for growing rhubarb.  But since I have all these berries a strawberry rhubarb crisp is sounding oh so good right now.  J was also thinking of some strawberry muffins.  And it’d be really good in angel food cake.

So folks, I have lots of berries on hand.  Any good recipes you’re willing to share?

    Hi,
Curious to know what you pay for rhubarb
in Florida. We take it for granted here
    in Ontario I guess.

This is one of my recipes; hope it’s
    helpful.

    RICH RHUBARB-CRISP AND BUMBLEBERRY

    1 1/4 cup flour
    1 cup rolled oats
    3/4 cup brown sugar
1/2 tsp. nutmeg, 1/2 tsp. cinnamon
    1/2 cup melted butter

    SAUCE
    1 cup cold water
    2 tbsp. cornstarch
    3/4 cup sugar
1 1/2 tsp. grated orange peel

    FILLING
    1 1/2 cups chopped rhubarb
1 cup each of sliced strawberries and apples (peeled)
    1 cup blueberries

Combine the flour, oats, brown sugar and spices. Add the butter. Put 1/2 of this mixture into a greased 9″ pan.

In the meantime mix sauce ingredients. Cook 5 minutes over med-low heat until thickened. Stir continuously. Toss the fruits and pour over base crust in pan. Pour sauce over top. Sprinkle with the rest of the base mixture.

Bake 350F 60 minutes. Serve warm with or without ice-cream. This is very rich all by itself.

I’m not sure. The last time I looked, fresh (in the produce section) was about $6 for 3-4 stalks. I might just get some from the frozen section, which might be cheaper. And it’s pre-chopped. And yes, it is something taken for granted. My great aunt used to have a ton of rhubarb plants/bushes in her back yard. I remember just going, picking, cleaning and eating them straight. yum!

Wow…6 dollars for a few stalks. Seems
like alot. I certainly have taken it for
    granted; I won’t anymore.
